Sprint's poor cellular service compounded by poor customer service - Airave

I was a Sprint customer from 2003-2013. When I first started with Sprint, their service was decent and reasonably priced. That quickly changed. Within two years, I noticed the quality of calls and basic cellular service decline steadily. In 2008, I started attending the University of Colorado and could not get a signal at all for data or calls. Sprint ended up sending me a special antenna to make calls through my ISP at home, but I was still unable to make calls if I was not at home, despite being on a major university campus. Customer service kept telling me cellular service was in the process of being upgraded, and they couldn't do anything else. This went on for 3 years, which I believe is plenty of time to upgrade service.

In 2011, I graduated and moved to Springfield, MA. The service there was a little better but only marginally. I still had trouble with most calls and data was practically non-existent. I kept using the antenna Sprint had given me all the while being told that cellular service was in the process of being upgraded. How long does it take to upgrade a wireless network? In 2013 I moved to Holyoke, a city just a few miles from Springfield. The first month I was there, it appeared that the Sprint network was finally working normally so I sent the antenna I had been using back. It wasn't long until I realized that was a mistake.

Within weeks, I realized that I only got decent service when I was within about 1 mile of the local mall. I contacted Sprint customer service, and guess what they told me- the cellular service was being upgraded. I told them I didn't believe it and just to send me another antenna that I could use at home. The person on the phone said I would now have to pay for the antenna to the tune of some $200. Because I had already had the use of a free one and sent it back, I was no longer eligible to get another free one. This was backed up by the customer service manager who I asked to speak with.

I am guessing that Sprint had given out so many free antennas because of their poor service that they couldn't afford to do so anymore. This is a warning to anyone contemplating the move to Sprint. Expect poor service, no matter where you are or go. On top of that, expect to purchase a special antenna to be able to make calls through your home ISP for some additional amount, because I doubt they are giving them out for free anymore.

I switched to another carrier in 2013 and get great reception everywhere I had problems with Sprint. I haven't tried at the Univ. of CO yet, but I'm sure I would notice a difference. I don't even need a special antenna to do wireless calling, since my new phone and carrier has software installed to let the phone do it without the need for separate hardware.I will never go back to Sprint since after 10 years of being a loyal customer, they could only tell me they were upgrading their network for the last 5 years and until then I'd have to purchase additional equipment through them just to be able to make calls at home.

Choose anyone else but Sprint, and heaven help you if they buy your current mobile carrier. Make sure you demand they keep the current network in place and don't upgrade you to the Sprint network.
